Micro beekeeping, built around better hives

Micro beekeeping is a commercially focused approach that prioritises the health, productivity and sustainable management of each colony—not simply increasing hive numbers. Members responsibly harvest honey while developing premium products, beeswax goods, queen breeding, pollen, propolis and other specialist opportunities that help retain more value through direct markets and beekeeper-owned brands.

AMBA was established by beekeepers who began sharing practical knowledge about production, product development, costs, compliance and market access. As a national association with South Australian roots, we connect people building sustainable enterprises through collaboration, regular updates, online and in-person meetings, and opportunities to learn from one another.

Micro beekeeping is defined by how colonies are managed, not by a fixed number of hives. It prioritises healthy colonies, responsible harvesting, efficient production, product diversification and retaining more commercial value from each hive.

Members may develop premium honey, beeswax products, specialist hive products or direct-to-consumer markets while working within local forage and seasonal conditions.

AMBA focuses specifically on micro beekeeping enterprises: sustainable production, innovation, product development and the practical skills needed to build viable businesses. It is designed for people who want to make better commercial use of what their colonies responsibly produce.

AMBA complements beekeeping clubs and commercial industry associations rather than replacing them. Its member-led approach encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing and connections across Australia.

AMBA is affiliated with Amateur Beekeepers Australia (ABA), which provides administrative and membership management support. By joining AMBA, members also gain the benefits of joining ABA, including access to additional resources and beekeeper insurance.

Current membership fees, eligibility details and joining arrangements are confirmed through the ABA membership process. This ensures prospective members receive the latest information before taking action.

Members receive regular updates and opportunities to connect through online and in-person meetings. AMBA encourages members to share practical knowledge and skills, helping grow a professional network of micro beekeepers across Australia.

As the association develops, activities may include workshops, specialist training, collaborative purchasing and access to services or resources that support responsible hive management and enterprise development.
